If you’ve ever admired our stunning photos from Ocean City’s biggest festivals, chances are they came through the lens of Mike Detwiler. As the official photographer of OC Rock & Ride Bikefest and OC Shore Magazine, Mike has a unique way of capturing both the energy of the crowd and the spirit of the ride.
Q: Mike, how did you first get into photography?
Mike: Back in 2016, I was taking sunrise photos with my phone, but it just wasn’t cutting it. Best Buy had a Canon t6s with a couple of lenses for $600, and I jumped on it. Once I realized I was kind of good at it, I stuck with it. Now I shoot with Canon R5s and R5 MkII’s.
Q: You’ve also got a love for motorcycles. Tell us about that connection.
Mike: I’ve had five bikes over the years. I bought my first in 1994. I don’t have one right now, but I’ve always loved motorcycles, and being at Bikefest lets me stay close to the culture and the community.
Q: How did you become the official Bikefest photographer?
Mike: About six years ago, I just showed up to Bikefest with my cameras said, “I’m your new photographer.” I’ve been there ever since.
Q: What does photography mean to you personally?
Mike: It’s my escape from life. When you’re looking through the eyepiece, it’s just you and whatever you’re focusing on—nothing else matters at that point in time.
Q: You also have a strong love for music. How does that tie in?
Mike: I’ve always loved music more than the average person. Once I got into photography, I realized I could combine the two. Now I shoot all the major festivals in Ocean City. Photography has opened a lot of doors for me and introduced me to some great friends along the way.
